Research has shown that when someone has experienced a trauma, it physically changes your brain. There's an emotional and physical response to a traumatic event, the amygdala in your brain becomes overactive and you might become hypervigilant. Psychological trauma can affect various areas of your life, even after the event has occurred. There may be present situations that are triggering and you might be unaware of the reasons that the event is so distressing, painful and how it's making your life dysfunctional.
The good news is that your brain is adaptable and malleable. With the right therapeutic approach, the implementation of healthy behavioral changes and the replacement of cognitive distortions, the neuroplasticity of your brain can make positive changes in your life.
